2026 Wenchang International Aerospace Forum opens: 17 company signings and a Hainan cross-border space-data processing trade zone unveiled
At the 25 August forum, the Wenchang Space City administration signed with 17 industry-chain companies, Hainan Aerospace Group signed with six institutions, and two cross-border space cooperation platforms were unveiled.
The 2026 Wenchang International Aerospace Forum opened on 25 August in Wenchang, Hainan, under the theme 'rockets return to the free-trade port, stars launch the space city'. According to China News Service, the Wenchang International Space City administration signed industrial investment and strategic cooperation agreements with 17 upstream and downstream companies, and Hainan Aerospace Group signed strategic agreements with six institutions including China Galaxy Securities, covering manufacturing, launch, recovery, testing, education, tourism and financial services. During the forum the 'Hainan cross-border space-data processing trade zone' was formally unveiled, and a 'smart-computing constellation joint laboratory' between Thailand's GISTDA and the Hainan Satellite Data and Applications Research Center was established. According to Securities Times, the zone is China's first cross-border processing trade zone dedicated to the space sector, integrating space-data collection, processing, trading and applications. The head of Hainan Aerospace Group said the Hainan commercial launch site has completed 21 launches to date.
The Hainan commercial launch site has already carried several batches of satellite-internet deployment launches, and Wenchang is moving from building a launch site to integrating industry and city. A finance sub-forum on 26 August focused on capital-market support for commercial space.
Our take: signing counts are a routine local investment-promotion metric. What matters is whether the cross-border data-processing zone can actually implement data-export and trading rules — that will decide whether Hainan becomes a commercial remote-sensing data hub for Southeast Asia.
